Thanksgiving prep: why your washer needs a deep clean before the big cook

Thanksgiving is three weeks away, and if you're hosting in Maple Ridge or anywhere across Metro Vancouver, your washing machine is about to earn its keep. Tablecloths, napkins, kitchen towels, guest bedding—the holiday laundry spike is real. But if your washer hasn't had a proper clean since summer, you're setting yourself up for slow cycles, incomplete rinses, or worse, a breakdown mid-holiday week.

The problem is invisible. Over months of regular use, especially through Vancouver's damp autumn weather, detergent residue, mineral deposits, and lint accumulate inside the drum, pump, and drain system. Your machine looks fine from the outside, but internally it's working harder to move water through a narrower path. Add Thanksgiving's volume to that friction, and cycles that normally take 45 minutes stretch to an hour or more.

Why autumn is the perfect time to clean

September and October in Metro Vancouver bring cooler temperatures and higher humidity. Your washing machine has been running through months of damp weather—moisture that encourages soap scum buildup and can leave a faint odour even in machines that seem clean. How to deep-clean your washer

Run a hot-water cycle with either white vinegar (2 cups) or a commercial washing machine cleaner, following the product instructions. If your machine has a "cleaning" or "maintenance" cycle, use it; otherwise, select the longest hot-water wash available and let it run empty. Do this once, then repeat if your machine hasn't been cleaned in over six months.

While that cycle runs, move to the drain filter. Most front-loaders and many top-loaders have a small, removable filter near the bottom front of the machine. Empty it—you'll likely find lint, hair, coins, and debris. Rinse it under warm water and replace it. This single step can cut cycle time by several minutes because water drains freely again.

Check your inlet screens

Your washer's cold and hot water inlet hoses connect to small mesh screens inside the machine. Over time, especially in autumn when Metro Vancouver's water system carries more sediment from rainfall, these screens clog. Turn off the water supply at the taps behind your washer, disconnect the inlet hoses (have a towel ready—a little water will spill), and unscrew the connector nuts. Look inside the machine's inlet ports: you'll see a small screen. If it's visibly dirty, use a soft brush or cloth to clean it, or soak it in vinegar for 20 minutes. Replace it and reconnect the hoses.

Test a large load before Thanksgiving

After cleaning, run a test load of large items—bath towels, table linens, or old sheets. This tells you whether your machine now handles volume properly. Time the cycle. If it completes in your machine's normal timeframe and the load rinses thoroughly, you're ready. If cycles are still sluggish, call a technician; there may be a deeper issue like a clogged pump or a failing motor.
