The August mildew problem

The combination of residual moisture, warm air, and the dark, enclosed environment inside your washer creates a perfect incubator for odour-causing bacteria. Next, clean the door gasket. Pull back the rubber seal and wipe the groove thoroughly with a dry cloth. You'll likely find accumulated lint, detergent residue, and moisture. This is where most mildew hides.

Finally, locate and clean the drain pump filter (check your machine's manual for the exact location). Empty any trapped water and lint, then rinse it under running water.

Prevention habits for the rest of summer

Leave the washer door open after every load. This is the single most effective prevention step. Moisture needs to evaporate, and an open door allows air circulation. If you're concerned about appearance, close it before bed or an hour after the cycle ends.

Use a small amount of high-efficiency (HE) detergent. Excess soap residue feeds bacteria. Check that you're using the right detergent type for your machine—HE washers need HE soap.

Wipe the gasket with a dry cloth once a week, even if there's no visible moisture. This removes trapped water before mildew can establish itself.
