May in Metro Vancouver means hiking trails are open, parks are lush—and your laundry is muddier than it's been since last autumn. Soil, silt, and organic matter from wet trails, yards, and gardens don't just stain clothes; they accumulate inside your washing machine where you can't see them. Sand and sediment settle in drain lines, cling to pump filters, and build up in the rubber gasket of front-loaders.

Unlike a quick stain, this silent accumulation can reduce your machine's efficiency, create odours, and eventually trigger expensive repair calls. The good news: a few simple habits now prevent problems all season.

Pre-rinse muddy clothes outside

The easiest protection is the simplest: shake out or rinse heavily soiled clothes with a garden hose before they go in the machine. Knock off dried mud from hiking boots, soccer gear, or work clothes. For very wet mud, a quick rinse outside removes the bulk of sediment before it enters your washer's drain system.

This single step cuts the amount of grit your machine has to handle by 50–70%. It takes 30 seconds and pays dividends.

Run a monthly deep-flush cycle

Even with pre-rinsing, fine sediment gets through. Once a month during spring and early summer, run a hot empty wash cycle with two cups of white vinegar. The heat and acidity dissolve mineral deposits and flush residual silt from internal passages.

Front-loaders especially benefit from this routine. The shallow water level and gentle tumble of front-loaders means sediment doesn't always rinse away as thoroughly as in top-loaders, so a vinegar flush keeps hidden buildup at bay.

Check your drain filter every 6–8 weeks

Your washing machine has a drain filter—usually a small access panel at the bottom front of the unit. During spring, check it every 6–8 weeks instead of the usual twice-yearly routine. Unscrew the cap, let any trapped water drain into a bucket, and pull out any visible sediment, hair, or debris.

A clogged filter forces your pump to work harder, slows drainage, and can eventually fail. Catching mud before it hardens in there takes five minutes and costs nothing.

Water temperature and load size matter

Wash muddy clothes in cold water, not hot. Cold water prevents soil from setting into fibres—a bonus for stain removal—and also reduces the risk of sediment fusing to drum surfaces. Hot water can actually bake fine particles onto metal.

Also: don't overload. A packed drum doesn't allow clothes to tumble freely, which means sediment doesn't rinse out as effectively. Spring loads of muddy gear are heavier when wet, so resist the urge to cram everything in at once.

A seasonal mindset

May through June is peak mud season on the Lower Mainland. Treat this window as a maintenance season for your washer, just as you'd winterize a car. A few minutes of prevention now—a pre-rinse habit, a monthly vinegar flush, a quick filter check—keeps your machine running smoothly through the wet months and saves you from an emergency service call in June.
