Why your dryer takes twice as long in summer—and it's not what you think

It's mid-July, your dryer is running for 90 minutes on a regular cotton cycle, and you're wondering if something's broken. It's not—it's summer in Metro Vancouver, and the air outside is working against your machine.

Why humidity kills dryer efficiency

Your dryer works by heating air, passing it through wet clothes, and then exhausting that moisture-laden air outside. In summer, the air coming in from outside is already saturated with moisture from the Lower Mainland's marine climate. That means your dryer has to work much harder to actually *remove* moisture from your load, because the air it's pulling through the vent is already heavy with humidity.

Think of it like trying to wring out a sponge into a bucket that's already full. The dryer keeps running, the drum keeps turning, but the evaporation process slows to a crawl.

The vent is almost always the real problem

Before you blame the weather, check your dryer vent. A clogged or partially blocked vent traps humid air inside the drum instead of expelling it outside. Lint buildup is the culprit 90% of the time—and summer humidity actually makes lint stick harder to vent walls.

Pull your dryer away from the wall (or open the access panel if it's a stacked unit). Disconnect the vent hose and shine a flashlight inside. You should see daylight or feel air movement. If you see lint matted to the sides or a blockage partway down, that's your problem. A vent brush kit costs under $30 and takes 20 minutes to use.

If your dryer vents to the exterior wall, also check the outdoor damper. In White Rock's damp conditions, these metal flaps sometimes swell or stick shut. Push it gently from outside to make sure it swings freely.

Don't forget the moisture sensor

Many modern dryers have a moisture sensor inside the drum—a small metal strip that detects when clothes are dry by measuring electrical conductivity. Dust and lint accumulate on this sensor over time, especially in summer when the dryer runs constantly.

A dirty sensor thinks clothes are drier than they actually are, so it cuts the cycle short and leaves your laundry damp. Then you run it again. Then again. Your hydro bill climbs, and you assume the dryer is aging out.

Clean the sensor with a soft cloth and a tiny bit of white vinegar. It's inside the drum near the lint trap opening. This alone often cuts cycle times in half.

When to worry it's actually broken

If your vent is clear, the sensor is clean, and the damper moves freely, but cycles are still running 80+ minutes in July, your heating element or thermostat may be failing. That's when a service call makes sense. But honestly, 9 times out of 10 in summer, it's lint, a stuck damper, or a grimy sensor.

The silver lining

Once Labour Day hits and humidity drops, you'll notice an immediate difference. Your cycles will shrink back to 45–50 minutes. Until then, running your dryer in the early morning (before outdoor humidity peaks) can shave 10–15 minutes off cycle time. And using your dryer's lower-heat setting, while slower, is gentler on fabrics and uses less electricity when the machine is already struggling.
